Diane Sings Julie
“Diane Sings Julie” is first an homage to Julie Andrews. Her unforgettable music was a combination of her remarkable voice and her persona. Already well known on Broadway, the movie The Sound of Music made hers a household name.
Second, Diane Sings Julie is a tour de force by soprano Diane Penning who to date has appeared with more than 30 symphonies performing solo symphony pops programs and classical concerts throughout the nation and in Canada. Her specially crafted Julie show, with orchestra and accompanying children’s choir, incorporates Andrews’ major works ranging from the 1957 televised musical Cinderella, to her Broadway renditions of My Fair Lady and Camelot, to her movies including The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins.
Evoking Andrew’s voice from her golden years, Penning’s (voice) has been described as “evergreen” and “thrilling with gorgeous high notes” … “[with] an attractive stage presence and easy style of singing, [Penning’s voice] has something of Andrews’ remarkable clarity and naturalness,” wrote Kenneth DeLong, of the Calgary Herald. …” Jeffrey Kaczmarczyk of the Grand Rapids Press described a standing ovation “when she closed the first half [of her concert] with ‘Climb Every Mountain’ from The Sound of Music. First it was goosebumps all around as she climbed, then cheers when she reached the peak and held the final note for a long time.”
Penning navigates her designed program of beloved music with ease and grace and obvious joy.
Like Andrews, this is what she was born to do.
